Stetson’s expertise in water resources and water rights was established with the testimony of Thomas Stetson in the landmark case of Arizona v. California (decided by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1963), which determined water rights in the Colorado River basin and resulted in the Practicably Irrigable Acreage standard to quantify the amount of water Indian tribes are entitled to under the Winter’s Doctrine. Over the years, Stetson’s staff has followed in the footsteps of Mr. Stetson, demonstrating technical expertise in numerous high-profile negotiations, providing litigation support, and contributing to the development of various inter-state water compacts and settlement agreements. Our staff have testified before federal appropriations committees and met with congressional representatives to successfully acquire project support, authorization, and funding for our clients. In recent years, Stetson’s staff has provided expert witness testimony in state and federal court proceedings pertaining to both surface water rights and groundwater that have shaped changes and established case precedence in western water law.
